To know me is to know that I love a trip down memory lane! I wouldn’t say I live in the past, but if anyone were to say I did, I wouldn’t put up much of an argument. Lol Although for me it’s deeper than living in the past, it’s an infatuation with anything older than me. Whether it’s women, cars or music, anything that was here prior to the late 80’s has my full attention.

Moving with this mindset is what lead me to want to venture into film photography back in 2015. Having been shooting for 6 years at that point, I felt compelled to slow down and look back at the photography of the past. My mind was bombarded with thoughts and memories of what our relationship with photography was prior to everyone having a camera phone in their pocket.

I missed the physical aspect of photography! Remember what it was like to have an actual photograph that you could hold in your hand? Men carried photos of their wives and children in their wallets. Young lovers had pictures of their sweethearts in their lockers at school and framed photos of loved ones at their work desk. A friend showing up with the pictures from a previous event, or going through the stacks of photo albums at your grandmothers house. A time where you could still pick up a magazine for your commute to work, and there you would see photos of the highest caliber printed on actual paper. As a photographer I wanted to contribute to the world of Film Photography.

So it wasn’t long before I was on eBay going through the millions of listings for old 35mm film cameras. I wasn’t even sure what I was looking for. All I knew was, it had to be a Canon. It was there that I found her. A pre owned ‘Canon AE-1 Program’ produced in 1985. It was in great pre-owned condition and it came with the lens, the strap and an external flash! It was love at first sight (or at least the sight of the picture. Lol) At the time I remember it being very inexpensive. Something in the neighborhood of $80 total, Shipping and all! (Of course this is before the 35mm Film Revolution.) It was a no brainer. I hit ‘Buy it Now’ and waited for my new toy to arrive!

I told myself I would learn how to shoot, develop snd print 35mm film. Within a week I had already shot a full roll and was likely starting the second. I’ve fallen behind on learning how to develop and print but I’ll definitely be there at some point. I received my camera in the mail, named her Penelope (all my cameras have names) and the rest is history.
